It Was Never About the Mirror

Let's be honest.
Most of us didn't start moving our bodies because we were chasing peace...we started because we were chasing a smaller number, a tighter waistline, a better reflection.
January 1st whispers: "This is the year."
And for a few weeks we believe it.
We lace up the shoes.
We join the gym.
We commit.
But then something happens.
The mirror doesn't change fast enough.
The scale doesn't cooperate.
Life gets busy.
Motivation fades.
And just like that...another "resolution" quietly disappears.
But what if the problem was never our discipline?
What if it was our why?
The Lie We've Been Sold
We've been conditioned to believe that movement is about appearance.
The reward is external. Visible. Measurable.
But that's the short-term game.
Because when the only payoff is what you see in the mirror, you're constantly waiting...judging...measuring...
And eventually—you quit.
Not because you're incapable. But because the reward feels too far away.
The Truth That Changes Everything
Movement isn't just physical.
It's emotional. It's mental. It's deeply, profoundly personal.
It's clarity when you mind feels cluttered.
It's calm when life feels loud.
It's energy when you thought you had none left.
And here's the shift:
When you move for how it makes you feel...you keep going.
Because the reward is immediate.
My 5-Mile Secret
I walk about five miles a day.
And yes...staying healthy matters to me. I'm setting my sites on centenarian (especially now that I know there's red wine involved). LOL!
But if I'm being honest?
That's not why I go.
I go because it's my thinking time. My getting back to me time.
It's where the noise quiets down and my real thoughts finally have room to speak.
It's where I sort things out. Where I process. Where I reconnect with what actually matters.
And—maybe most surprisingly—it's where my best ideas show up...my downloads as I call them.
Talks. Stories. Insights.
Entire frameworks have come to me somewhere between mile two and mile four.
Not sitting at a desk. Not forcing it.
But walking. Moving. Letting my mind breathe.
Especially in the Third Act
At this stage of life—this Third Act—I'm not trying to be who I was.
I'm trying to be who I am now.
And there's so much I still want to do. So much I still feel called to create, experience, and contribute.
And that doesn't come from sitting still.
It comes from engaging with life. From staying mentally sharp, emotionally connected, and creatively open.
And for me...that starts with movement.
Not as a task. But as a ritual.
What if You Flipped the Script?
What if movement wasn't about punishment...but permission?
Permission to think. To breathe. To feel better—today, not someday.
What if the goal wasn't a different body...but a different experience of your life?
Because when you feel better, you show up better.
In your relationships. In your decisions. In how you spend your time.
This Isn't About Fitness
It's about aliveness.
It's about creating space in your day where you can hear yourself again.
When you're not reacting...you're reflecting.
When you're not rushing...you're reconnecting.
So Here's the Real Question
Not:
"What do I want to look like?"
But:
"How do I want to feel?"
Because that answer? That's the one that lasts.
So, lace up your shoes. Step outside.
Not for the mirror. For you.
